Mission Statement:
To develop and deliver fraud prevention information to the public in order to increase awareness and decrease victimization in relation to fraud related activities.
Preamble:
The Alberta Community Crime Prevention Association, its Affiliates, its Chapters, Coordinators, Advocates and Volunteers form a not-for-profit crime prevention association dedicated to providing fraud awareness and prevention information in order to reduce the incidence of the crime of fraud.
Membership in the Association (hereinafter "HEADS UP") commits its members to adherence to the HEADS UP Code of Ethics and to the standards used to implement it.
HEADS UP members shall conduct themselves at all times in their interaction with others in a manner that brings respect and honour to the Association and to the goals and aims of the Association.
It is the responsibility of each member to aspire to the highest standards of ethical conduct. The Code of Ethics applies to all of the activities of its members including the execution of the programs of HEADS UP, research, teaching, supervision, consulting, personal education and learning, coaching, and other activities as well.
Familiarity with the Code of Ethics:
Members shall familiarize themselves with this Code of Ethics and its application to their activities.
Personal Accountability:
HEADS UP members shall provide only those services for which they are qualified by education, training, or experience. Should a member recognize any personal limitations or problems that might interfere with providing service to others, they shall seek advice and counsel from one who is qualified to give it.
Members shall seek to promote integrity in the study, teaching, practice and development of the HEADS UP programs.
An applicant can be refused if his or her interests and experience do not meet the requirements of the position or if their background makes them unsuitable to work with vulnerable people.
Respecting Others:
Members shall give the utmost in respect to the rights of other's privacy and confidentiality, and to opinions that differ from their own. Membership and client information is not to be sold, rented or given to unrelated entities. The gathering and handling of personal information is to follow PIPEDA (formerly Bill C-6) guidelines.
Public Representation of HEADS UP:
When providing services, HEADS UP members shall present the nature and purpose of their approach in language that can be understood and evaluated by other people. They will openly and freely represent the nature of outcomes and techniques used in providing such services.
Should it become reasonably clear that the services provided are not benefiting the recipient, the HEADS UP shall terminate those services.
HEADS UP members shall make only such statements and claims in representing their services that are true and accurate to the best of their knowledge and belief.
No statement or claim shall be made that gives false information. This ethical obligation extends to paid or unpaid advertising whether printed or not, interviews, press releases, media promotions and so forth.
While any HEADS UP member's personal standards and ethics are generally a private matter, the ethical standards of HEADS UP shall take precedence insofar as they affect the public perception of HEADS UP.
Design and Description of Education and Training Programs:
Members offering information and/or educational seminars shall ensure that these programs are competently designed to meet the goals for which claims are made.
Members shall ensure that all programs are clearly and accurately described as to training objectives and requirements.
Fundraising and Financial Accountability:
All organizations licensed, operated or managed by the association agree to follow the Ethical fundraising and Financial Accountability Code developed by the Canadian Centre for Philanthropy.
The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy has developed this Ethical Fundraising & Financial Accountability Code, in consultation with charity leaders throughout Canada. Its primary purpose is to assure donors of the integrity and accountability of charities that solicit and receive their financial support.
Dealing With Code Violations:
Should a member be confronted with a possible violation of this Code of Ethics, the member shall advise and cooperate with the Board of Directors in its resolution, and the matter will be held at all times in complete confidence. In cases where a member has been found to violate the Code in an irreparable way, the Board will recommend the discontinuance of membership of that member.
Improper Complaints:
Members shall not file or encourage the filing of ethics complaints that are frivolous and are intended to harm the respondent rather than to protect the public.
